چکیده
Abstract. We present a reliable and robust open dynamic chamber for measuring greenhouse gas exchange in peatlands with minimal disturbance of the ground. This chamber, called “skirt chamber”, is based on transparent plastic film placed above an frame made sparse interwoven wires expanded around base below steel chain that ensures contact to ground, avoiding damage, trenching, cutting vegetation. Gas determined using portable analyzer from mass balance which imperfect sealing ground quantified through injection methane pulse. The method was tested pristine peatland dominated by Sphagnum magellanicum located Navarino Island subantarctic Magellanic ecoregion Chile. Our results indicate skirt allowed determination fluxes ecosystem respiration about 20 min, limit detection 0.185 mg CH4 m−2 h−1 173 CO2 h−1, respectively. conclude minimally intrusive, fast, portable, inexpensive allows quantification emissions high spatial resolution remote locations without delay.

Opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in tropical peatlands.
The upcoming global mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries should include and prioritize tropical peatlands. Forested tropical peatlands in Southeast Asia are rapidly being converted into production systems by introducing perennial crops for lucrative agribusiness, such as oil-palm and pulpwood plantations, causing large greenhouse gas...
متن کاملMeasurement of greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural sites using open-path optical remote sensing method.
Improved characterization of distributed emission sources of greenhouse gases such as methane from concentrated animal feeding operations require more accurate methods. One promising method is recently used by the USEPA. It employs a vertical radial plume mapping (VRPM) algorithm using optical remote sensing techniques. We evaluated this method to estimate emission rates from simulated distribu...
متن کاملTechnical note: drifting versus anchored flux chambers for measuring greenhouse gas emissions from running waters
Stream networks have recently been discovered to be major but poorly constrained natural greenhouse gas (GHG) sources. A fundamental problem is that several measurement approaches have been used without crosscomparisons. Flux chambers represent a potentially powerful methodological approach if robust and reliable ways to use chambers on running water can be defined. Here we compare the use of a...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from rice
Rice provides the staple food for over 60% of the world’s population. Globally 80% of rice is grown by small farmers in low income and developing nations, and in India rice farming is a key source of employment for the 60% of Indian workers still dependent on agriculture for work. Yet rice production is also an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, for example responsible for between 3 ...
